Here’s a good short read from Kellogg Insight.
It outlines the 4 steps to gaining expertise:
1) Learn from others, just make sure they’re experienced
2) Find a mentor who’s at the top of their game
3) Expect to do some grunt work. You need to serve your time as an apprentice learning the very basics
4) Explore a variety of areas and then exploit one to generate your best work
This is good advice to keep in mind whether you’re starting out in your career, switching directions later in life, or looking to learn a new hobby.
Although, you have to hope there’s a suitably qualified mentor around when you need them!
